Focusing On Anxiety Disorders

By Rene A Lacape

You may be restless at night, tossing and turning in your bed because of excessive worry. You may find yourself cracking under pressure, whether when preparing for a test or when you get ready to report to the boss. But does your uneasiness qualify as actual anxiety?

Today, all of us seem to be growing up and being accustomed to living inside a tormented society. Even the daily news nowadays seems to report on only troublesome matters everyday. The news would report new findings on whets inside our food and how it could harm us and whether our children would be able to do well in their education. Sometimes it seems worrying is the only thing our society is good at. We concern ourselves with the daily happenings around the world from the criminal news around the world, the financial situation of the world market, to the illnesses and environmental problems. We might as well just name our newspapers the "Sad Paper".

The proper way to deal with these anxiety problems is to at first identify the symptoms. For generalized anxiety disorder there are several different warning signs that indicate the beginning of the sickness. The very first symptom or sign is that you cannot calm down and always feel agitated for no apparent reasons, you always feel shaky and various other signs. You might feel that you have irregular heartbeat and you always feel woozy. Breathing seems to be very hard for you and you always feel uneasy in the stomach

You might seem overwhelmed by a feeling of fear. You might dread tomorrow because you wonder what disasters will befall your family. You may experience insomnia, irritability, impatience, and an inability to concentrate. You may also feel impatient or on edge.

If you find yourself suffering from some of these signs longer than a month, then it is possible that you have contracted general anxiety disorder. The problem might be so serious that it is developing into an irrational fear for you. Most possibly it would mean that you are worrying unnecessarily about facing the smallest of matters and even finding ways to avoid the matter. Even though you feel that something is wrong, but you feel powerless to stop it from worsening further. The sickness is recognized as a full-blown problem if it is serious enough; Although people suffering from anxiety disorders might not be struggling with these irrational fears, but it may come along with their extensive worrying.

The general public should realize that in the study of phobias, the signs are divided into the three main categories. The first general phobia or fear is agoraphobia, in which the patient is suffering from the fear of going into public places which are crowded, for example the library or the beach. The reason for this fear is that you are fearful that you might be unable to go out of the public area safely if something happens. Another major phobia is social phobia in which you are afraid of talking and interactively communicating with other people, no matter the sex and age. You are afraid that you will say something wrong and you will humiliate yourself in front of other people. The final phobia is the simple phobia where the fear is of something in particular such as animals with lots of fur, cars and so on.

For some cases the problem of anxiety or excessive worrying can lead to a more serious condition, which is panic disorder. The symptoms of it happening would include the sudden increase of heart rate, discomfort in the upper body, feeling uneasy in the head, excessive perspiration, and unnecessary and discomforting images of dying. Overloading of these symptoms on the person's mind can be seriously incapacitating. Some reported cases are so serious that the patient is unable to perform his daily activities effectively or up to his normal standards. For more extreme cases of anxiety, there are reported cases of panic disorders. These panic attacks would induce faster heart beat than normal, pain in the upper body especially the chest, feeling giddy, non-stop sweating, and abnormal fear of dying. The problem can be really demotivating, since it can cause the person to perform badly in his daily work and other important activity. If the problem is really serious then it can badly affect the person's social life, making the person a lonely individual.

There are numerous causes of anxiety. These include stress, nutritional problems, and chemical imbalances. Treatment most often comes in the form of prescription drugs such as Clonidine or Clonazepam. You should be careful, however, to review the side-effects of such drugs. In some cases, patients might find themselves to be dependent on the medication.

If you have run out of ideas to stop and overcome your phobias and anxiety, then another way is to join an active support group. When you are surrounded by the people from different backgrounds who are suffering from the same difficulties and therefore are looking for support and help from the same people then it is easier to overcome it. Listening to other people talk about how they are struggling and coping with the same problems can be more effective and helping for yourself more than you think. With all these people around you helping you cope with your difficulties, you would not feel lonely and you feel happy when you realize there are actually people who really care.

Anxiety can be a painful and debilitating condition, harming one?s self-image, one?s relationship with family members, and one?s ability to perform one?s job. It can also lead to panic attacks, which lead to another set of serious problems. Fortunately, there has been a great deal of research in recent years regarding anxiety disorders. With appropriate treatment, people who suffer from anxiety disorders can learn to function effectively. However, treatment often involves a great deal of work and determination. In time, you should be able to ascertain the most effective methods of treating your condition. - 30437
