Symptoms Of Panic Attacks - Modern Treatments For Panic Attacks

By Hal Kirby

Sara was on her way to meet some friends for coffee. All of a sudden she felt familiar waves of nausea surge through her and she started to feel light headed and disconnected from her surroundings. It was the third time this week this had happened and the panic attacks were getting worse.

All over the world, people put up with from the debilitating effects of panic attacks. Panic attacks are defined as sudden severe episodes of severe physical, emotional and mental panic or terror, usually focused around an irrational fear. Panic attacks are usually of short duration, and may last less than minutes, although some of the symptoms might continue to be felt for a longer time.

Anyone who has suffered from a panic attack knows exactly what a truly frightening experience it is. In fact, practically everyone will experience some form of anxiety or panic attack during the course of his or her life.

Do you suffer from any of these symptoms of panic attacks?

Many people experience a slight case of "butterflies in the stomach" when facing a tense situation, but full-blown anxiety attack symptoms can mean severe nausea or stomach cramps, along with muscles so tense they hurt to move, tingling or numbness in the fingers, toes, and on the face, bouts of sweating, and a pounding heartbeat. There may also be symptoms such as the fear that you are losing your mind, and feeling disassociated with your surroundings, as if you are viewing a movie.

It is because such a large percentage of the population suffers from panic attacks and anxiety that doctors and researchers are constantly looking for new treatments every day. There are several current treatments that are available for panic attacks and anxiety disorders, ranging from medication to reduce anxiety, cognitive behavioural therapy which focuses on coping techniques and exposure therapy. There are also alternative treatments such as hypnosis, meditation and relaxation techniques.

Many therapies merely teach coping mechanisms and strategies on how to get over a panic attack once it happens. Medications can have unpleasant side effects, and the panic attacks start again if you stop taking the drugs. - 30437

Kerrie had a panic attack during a work meeting. She suddenly felt dizzy, started sweating, and felt a strange surge running through her head which made her think she was having a stroke. Her head felt heavy and her limbs tingled so she had to actually lie down. She is still embarrassed about the incident.

Millions of people worldwide endure the debilitating symptoms of panic attacks. A panic attack is defined as an abrupt, severe terror and fear episode without any real reason. A panic attack can last up to thirty minutes, although many attacks can last over after just ten minutes.

Anyone who has suffered from a panic attack knows exactly what a truly frightening experience it is. There are hundreds of thousands of people who are suffering from panic attacks today.

What are the symptoms of panic attacks?

Many people experience a slight case of "butterflies in the stomach" when facing a tense situation, but full-blown anxiety attack symptoms can mean severe nausea or stomach cramps, along with muscles so tense they hurt to move, tingling or numbness in the fingers, toes, and on the face, bouts of sweating, and a pounding heartbeat. There may also be symptoms such as the fear that you are losing your mind, and feeling disassociated with your surroundings, as if you are viewing a movie.

Because so many people today suffer from panic attacks due to our hectic, stressful lifestyle, researches are spending a lot of time and money on seeking out new treatments for sufferers of anxiety and panic attacks. Surprisingly, although many still recommend conventional treatments such as medication or cognitive behavioural therapy, many physicians are also recommending that patients try more alternative techniques such as meditation, hypnosis and yoga.

Unfortunately some methods for treating panic attacks and anxiety are outdated, such as 'deep breathing', positive affirmations, or using distraction to take your mind off the fear of an attack. You may be prescribed medications that have unpleasant side effects, and if you stop taking the drugs, the panic attacks start again. - 30437

Learn To Stop Panic Attacks Even If You Don't Know Why They Are Happening

By Lance Verster

A panic attack may be a scary thing, particularly if you do not know what is causing it. If you knew the cause you could avoid it, but if the cause is unknown then it could be anything and that means that an anxiety attack could happen at any time. So here is how to stop panic attacks if the cause is unknown.

The first thing to know is that you are not alone. Anxiety panic attacks are not unusual. Lots of people suffer from them. Do not be totally embarrassed or self conscious about it, because this will only serve to make it worse. After you have had one panic attack, it may be the stress of worrying about having another one that actually triggers it to happen. It is therefore very important that you know how to stop panic attacks before you have another one.

First, take a deep breath and think about what may be causing you stress currently in your life. These are all things that could be causing panic attacks for you, and dealing with these issues can help make them go away. If you're having difficulty working through these problems by yourself, please do seek professional help and don't ignore them. Trained therapists specialize in panic attacks can help you work through them and stop them from happening again.

One of the best ways you can help alleviate panic attacks is to exercise. Exercise can release pent up tensions that can lead to a panic attack. Exercising can help you get rid of this pent up energy positively, which can thwart panic attacks. Exercising will make you feel tired, too, but proper food and rest afterward will make you feel better than before.

Staying with exercise as a means to cope with panic attacks can also help you get into shape and start feeling good. One of the reasons for this is that it releases "feel-good" hormones called endorphins. And because you feel good, you'll feel better about yourself and better able to handle panic attacks if they do happen. You will be more self-confident, and this alone can help stave off future panic attacks.

Besides exercise, make sure you find some time for rest and relaxation your day. Just listen to your body and hear what it has to tell you. It's true that you may have a million thoughts rattling around in your head, but if you can, ignore them for a few minutes and focus on you. It sounds simple, but it may be a difficult habit to get into. When's the last time you actually tried to?

Most importantly, quit worrying about having another panic attack if you've already had one. Having another may be beyond your control, and worrying about it is certainly going to make it worse if it does happen. - 30437

Anxiety And Stress Issues

By Rene A Lacape

Endless fear, worry and anxiety may be a complicating condition and can have considerable impact in their lives not only mentally but both physically and psychologically. This kind of mental disorder problem is triggered every time the body prepares itself for a battle or fight condition when it intercepts potential danger or disaster. The rush of adrenaline and sudden hormonal changes accelerate the speed of the functioning of the various body parts and organs such as heart and brain, causing a heightened stress level, tension and anxiety.

This in turn can trigger abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, palpitations, tightness and pain in the chest region, shortness of breath, dizziness, frequent urination and even difficulty swallowing. These are just the physical effects that anxiety disorders produce.

In addition to the physical conditions, anxiety disorder is diagnosed when the people become overwhelmingly irritated, anxious or unable to focus and perform the daily routine works. They may find difficulty in keeping the reality in check and become excessively self conscious with various issues and worry about them for days or weeks even before a dreaded situation arises or happens.

In most situations, the emotional apprehension of people suffering with anxiety disorder can be significant. It is not uncommon that they constantly have a persistent and chronic fear of everyday problems even though these problems do not even exist in the first place. The fear may evolve into a more severe situation that may interfere with work, relationship, finances, health, school and just any other ordinary activities; or even imagining an illness or death. Due to these anticipatory anxiety associated with the emotional stress felt by the person, the severity of the condition will worsen and consumed by ill and unhealthy thoughts and impulses.

When you first experience anxiety your doctor must be able to diagnose your complaint. The doctor has to be able to decide if your symptoms are a medical condition or if they are a mental problem. Once you have been identified as having an anxiety disorder, treatment to cure or control your condition may be begun.

The symptoms stated above may be considered as anxiety symptoms if they are of a prolonged or severe state or if the feelings of anxiety come into existence when there is nothing dangerous or stressful to bring them about. Then if these anxiety symptoms start to interfere with your everyday life and activities like work or social events then you know for certain that you are suffering from anxiety disorder.

Do not fear to seek help and consultation with a qualified doctor if you suspect that you are suffering from anxiety disorder. The purpose of the consultation is to confirm whether the symptoms that you are facing are symptoms of anxiety disorder or a normal physical condition. If you are diagnosed with anxiety disorder, the doctor will advise you the course of treatment and help that you required based on the diagnosis. Take action to control and cure the condition; and help yourself! Bear in mind that negligence and ignorance of a real medical condition can lead to impairment to recovery. - 30437

Stress And Anxiety

By Rene A Lacape

As the world knows anxiety is a normal response to danger. Everyone has felt anxious for something at some point in their lives. There is however times when anxiety turns into something else, this being a mental condition known as anxiety disorders. People who have anxiety disorders are some times afraid to get treatment for their anxiety as they seem to feel ashamed of having a mental condition. However anxiety treatments are valid medical remedies for a complaint that can affect your life. There is therefore nothing to be ashamed of having anxiety disorders or being treated for them.

There are many types of anxiety treatments that you can try. Before you embark on such a step it's a good idea to talk with a doctor or a psychiatrist who specializes in anxiety and panic disorders. As the treatments can be varied you will need to let your doctor know that you suspect that you are suffering from anxiety disorders so that your specific complaint can be identified. Once your anxiety is diagnosed then treatment may begin.

From the wide selection of available remedies and treatment options, you should evaluate the suitability of these alternatives and its effect in order to settle on the products or methods that best reflect your condition. Again, remember that it is always best to discuss and consult the with your doctor or psychiatric specialist to better understand the nature of these remedies and to gauge if the treatment selections are best fit for treating your anxiety and panic disorders.Traditionally, psychotherapy and prescriptive medication have been most commonly used and recently, complimentary and alternative medicines have gained popularity for its natural healing power. Although the effectiveness of alternative medicines in healing anxiety disorders have yet to be fully established but many trials have shed some lights on its use for such purposes.

Conventional treatment of anxiety disorder is no other than the traditional prescription of medications for lowering the chemical substances in the body that leads to constant anxiety. These medications, some of which can relieve the symptoms of anxiety quickly with few side effects, are also commonly used for treatment of depression. Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) and Beta-blockers are few examples of these medicines. Generally, medication alone is not enough and the treatment normally has to involve some forms of psychotherapy simultaneously. The main reason is that while medications allow the patients to better deal with anxiety disorders and relieve those adverse effects felt by them, long term use may lead to over reliance on these drugs.

Introduction of earlier techniques of Acupuncture and Ayurveda in controlling anxiety disorders has gradually been accepted as an option of alternative anxiety treatment. These treatments can help to restore comfort and release tension and negative sensation by stimulating internal energy flows that relieve the imbalance of tension build-up in the specific organs. They use essential oils derived from flowers, herbs and plants as well as sterilized acupuncture needles to stimulate the effect of relaxation and energy through scent.

Gemstone therapy represents another alternative anxiety therapy that is commonly practiced today in health, wellness and fitness centers. The benefits of this therapy are similar to that derived from Acupuncture and Ayurveda in achieving a balance in the internal energy flows in the body and organs. The approach of this therapy in healing anxiety is to allow the body to relax by resting a gemstone with specific colour and healing energy on the specific part of the body.

With so many other effective anxiety treatments currently available and many more other new and improved therapies that are constantly evolving through continued research and testing; conventional medication and the alternative Acupuncture, Ayurveda and Gemstone therapies are not all exhaustive. Many patients turn to other alternative therapies ranging from yoga, Tai Chi, massage and dance therapy to talk counseling, cognitive behavioural therapy, meditation, etc. These techniques are unique in its own course and are helpful in relieving anxiety or alleviating stress that can build up into anxiety. With a proper and appropriate combination of medication and alternative therapies and consistent treatment, you will be more than happy to feel in control of a new life ahead of you. - 30437

Have Peace Of Mind And Get Help

By Rene A Lacape

It is often difficulty to maintain control of your impulses when others around us make us mad. It is even more difficult when the prices in the economy increases every year, and the legal and political system is constantly putting more demands on us everyday. Most of us deal with the stressors in life as they come our way, but some of us get out of control. Management is often the solution for treating anger; however, the person must be willing to admit their actions are causing more problems. When a person acts out violently, verbally abusive, assault and so on it not only causes problem for the person out of control, it also causes problems for others. Often when a person has anger issues he or she will attack others whether physically or mentally. The angered person will often attack in a way that belittles, humiliates, harms, or threatens another life. This person will need to learn to control his or her anger, since everyone around him or her is in a degree of danger, and sometimes more danger than others. Everyday, one is forced to face the challenges in life that may provoke anger be it from the people around us, the environment or just about anything. There are many who are able to face the challenges and deals with the stresses with triumph however, there may be some who cannot cope thus loosing control. The solution to anger is management but the first step towards dealing with this problem is to be able to admit that action taken as a result of incapability to control anger is causing further problems to oneself and others such as assault, violent acts and verbal abuse. It is common for a person who has anger issues to attack other people physically and mentally which could be anything from belittling, humiliating, harming or threatening another's life. All these can endanger someone's life therefore it is crucial that one learns to control anger.

Anger will stir from lack of control of impulses, desires and emotions. Inability to connect with emotions contributes to a chaotic mind and this in turn will influence control over with emotions and actions. This is where an output to anger can be dangerous. While some degree of anger is essential to us whenever we feel threaten, uncontrolled anger can lead to trouble. This is why a person who can control his emotions can live a fruitful life. However, when a person is pushed to the limit by continuous torment of his emotion, he will loose control and react violently to demise his misery.

One good scenario is definitely the case of school bully victims. These are children who cannot contain their anger anymore and has turned it into violence. In this case, not only does it create problems for the child, the people who provoked him and his environment, it usually leads to the child being blamed for the things he had done. The bully however might escape the whole ordeal and the child is left to face the consequences alone. We can't put full blame on the child for he may have tried alerting the school authority of his predicament but to no avail.

Each time we are angry we feel it in our body and mind. Our body will often tense when we feel angry. If you feel this tension then it is time to step back and take control. Why am I mad? Why do I feel this way? Asking yourself questions can help you find the answers if you search your mind hard enough. Usually after a person has developed a level of anger that is out of control, they will often strike out at persons even if there is no justifiable cause. The person could have moved something that belonged to that person and they will react by saying something like you stupid moron, why in the hell did you move my belongings? I cannot believe how stupid you are. Why do you bother breathing? This is only a few examples of a verbal attack issued by an angered person. The person may attack physically by kicking, hitting, punching, spitting, or causing other types of harm to the person. Our body and mind will grow tense when we get angry. When you feel this, you should quickly asses the feeling. Ask yourself questions such as why am I mad? And why do I fee this way? By probing your feelings, you might just find answers to your anger and not provoke it more. Those who can no longer contain their anger would usually explode in rage at their target. This is why doing something harmless such as moving the angry person's belonging could lead to the victim being attacked verbally and worse physically.

It is important to get management in play if you have anger problems. If you cannot control your emotions then one day, someone will control them for you. Anger is good if you have it under control, but when you .loose control someone, someday will pay and that someone in many cases will be you as well as the trail of victims behind you. Anger management should be adapted for those with anger issues. When you learn to manage your anger, it becomes a useful mechanism for your well being but if you fail, not only will you victimize others around you but you victimize yourself too. - 30437

By Rene A Lacape

You should know that the feeling of being stressed out is nothing unusual for a college student. To begin with, it might be your first time away from home. You miss your parents, your brothers and sisters, your friends. You miss the comfort of the family dwelling, the commemoration of birthdays and other special events. You might even miss the extra-curricular activities you enjoyed at your high school.

There is always pressure to do well in academically certain subjects that might be new to you. You could be blown away with the workload and preparation involved. The lack of proper study skills in high school could lead to a sluggish start at college, contributing to greater stress at college. You could face problems in locating a suitable place to study if you are not used to making use of library facilities.

You might also be dealing with the stress of having to live with roommates for the first time. Your roommates might not share your values, your interests, or even your sleeping patterns. If you have more than one roommate, you might feel outnumbered. If you were an only child, you might not be used to the stress involved in sharing a bathroom or a common study area.

Also, you might be dealing with the stress of your first serious relationship. You might not know how to handle conflict effectively. And you might be wondering whether you have become too serious too soon with your boyfriend or girlfriend. Also, finding the time to spend together can be a real challenge, given all the other demands on your time.

You might also be stressed out by the part-time job you have to work in order to support your studies. Your duties might be demanding, and the hours you have to put in may be interfering with your sleep. You might also be dealing with the stress of having to get along with difficult co-workers.
