A Few Tips On Managing Stress

You should know that the feeling of being stressed out is nothing unusual for a college student. To begin with, it might be your first time away from home. You miss your parents, your brothers and sisters, your friends. You miss the comfort of the family dwelling, the commemoration of birthdays and other special events. You might even miss the extra-curricular activities you enjoyed at your high school.

There is always pressure to do well in academically certain subjects that might be new to you. You could be blown away with the workload and preparation involved. The lack of proper study skills in high school could lead to a sluggish start at college, contributing to greater stress at college. You could face problems in locating a suitable place to study if you are not used to making use of library facilities.

You might also be dealing with the stress of having to live with roommates for the first time. Your roommates might not share your values, your interests, or even your sleeping patterns. If you have more than one roommate, you might feel outnumbered. If you were an only child, you might not be used to the stress involved in sharing a bathroom or a common study area.

Also, you might be dealing with the stress of your first serious relationship. You might not know how to handle conflict effectively. And you might be wondering whether you have become too serious too soon with your boyfriend or girlfriend. Also, finding the time to spend together can be a real challenge, given all the other demands on your time.

You might also be stressed out by the part-time job you have to work in order to support your studies. Your duties might be demanding, and the hours you have to put in may be interfering with your sleep. You might also be dealing with the stress of having to get along with difficult co-workers.

Students have to be advised that they have to accept stress as part of college. Life in a new and demanding environment would be initially difficult and has to be overcome positively. All it requires are effective management of all aspects of college life to keep stress to a minimum.

Students could begin by practicing a realistic and efficient timetable that caters to all priorities. This calls for great discipline in conforming to the specified schedule. Proper rest should never be neglected so that we may exercise and relax our minds. We may then regain better concentration when studying.

Students should never belittle the effect of weight gain on their stress levels. College is well known for weight gaining among students during the first year of classes. To keep unsightly bulges at bay, get rid of all unhealthy snacks and finger food. Adhere to a diet of meat with less fat, fish, fruits, vegetable and whole grains. It would be wise to eat little at parties and never misuse alcohol to avoid the pot belly. It requires some discipline to stay at a healthy weight in order to combat stress.

College is no doubt a major part of every student's life. The knowledge attained would develop us into thinking adults. College is where friendships that last a lifetime are made. Marriages made in Heaven have their beginnings in college. Students may acquire a new interest, hobby or a preference in college. Yet, college life is a frustrating chapter of one's journey in life. Demand of lecturers have to be met, friends pleased, roommates tolerated and orders of employers fulfilled. Responsibilities would have to be born for the first time by settling all utility bills. Each day presents a different challenge. Despite all this, it takes only some determination, skill and hard work to graduate from college.
